This one started off as a painting of 3 figs. Simple enough, bit cliché but figs are figs, and deserve to be painted. Then I pulled out an old cardboard box, cut a few holes in the side, and shone a light in through the holes to create some nice shadows and lighting effects. If that didn't grab my attention enough, I was drawn to the old cardboard flap which I pushed in to hide some light, and before I knew what I was doing, I was painting Three Figs on a box, inside a cardboard box. One subject totally doesn't relate to the other, but it may just be where I am up to in my own life, that is ... "what you see is what you get".

Work in Progress ... Buddha's Hand Citrus Fruit
Work in Progress ... This is the latest piece of exotic fruit that I've discovered in the fruit box to model for me. We try to source unusual pieces of fruit and vegetable to taste and experience, and this one was amazing. It's called Buddha's Hand, it's a citrus fruit, with strong citrus flavour and smells. Poor fruit at our place these days, doesn't get much chance to be eaten, it needs to be painted first. Oh well, it could be worse, we could have no fruit at all. This is the fruit I have waiting patiently on the sidelines for to be painted. Persimons, peaches, figs and a celeriac [celery family root vegetable]. Personally I love painting root vegetables, they pose great challenges to find as much color as possible out of fairly dull colors to start with. Bright colored tropical fruit is of course more appealing at first glance, but give me a garlic, or onion, or potato and I'm a happy painter.
